week 5 Using Search Engines

Lecture:

Today we had two weeks of slides to go through, but i had already done week 4's task sheet.

Weeks 5 tutorial was about search engines and all the difference between them.

We were asked to answer some questions on search engines in the tut, some of the questions were name 4 different search engines and what is a boolean search.

We then moved onto categories of information on the web, search tools types, problems with search engines, search engines interaction and the some search tips.

There wasn't much info in the slides therefor less to write about so today's blog is abit thin.

Workshop:

Strategies to structure a search engines:

  1. Make sure you have an advance search, so that you can narrow down search to what you want.

  2. Program the engine so it searches the words together.

  3. Make sure the search engine is easy to use and that you don't need a PhD to use it.

  4. Try to get the highest ranking info.

When I was looking for answers for this I used ask Jeeves. All I did was type in the question and then scrolled through the links it gave me to find the right page. There was alot of hits so i had choose the most recognised site.

readings:

This reading is internet search tips and strategies written by Robert Harris. The page has an overview on the net and includes how the Internet has an enormous quantity of information, with thousands of newsgroups and billions of web pages. It also has categories of web information; The Free Visible Web, The Free Invisible Web and Paid Databases over the Web.

This reading is on search engines. This site contains two graphs that are on millions of web page indexed and search engine sizes. It also has three common search engine; Google, Alta vista and northern lights and has a brief description on each of them.

The third reading was on search engine optimisation. This site a company that analyses your business website to see if it will be added to the list when someone searches for a product they might sell. Week 4 Finding and using web-based resources

Week 4 Easter Break

Well seeing that its easter break we didnt have a lecture or a tuturial, so there wasn't much to be said.
Going over the slides we were asked to answer questions such as:

  • Who invented the web? hard to answer to many people claim to have invented the internet.

  • What was the first web page constructed?

  • What does WWW stand for? world wide web

  • What are TCP and IP? Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol

  • What is html and what does it do? It was designed to help teacher create learning resources that can accessed on the web.

  • What does URL stand for? Uniform Resource Locator.

  • 3 doman names? edu, gov,co and org.

The lecture also covered internet v. web and gave some examples like on the internet you find computers and on th web you find documents, sounds, videos and info.

The first network of computers was at 4 university in 1969 were the host computers were connected into ARPANET which is a large wide-area network created by the united states Defense Advanced Research Project Agency.

We then learnt the definintion of the web-"is universal of assible information stored on computers throughout the world. The infomation is avalible through a gigantic network called the internet" .

The last couple of slides were on internet explorer and the browser interface and how to use the keys for short cuts on your keyboard.

Workshop 4

1.

Haggishunt.com

  • None of the videos on the page have anything to with the site.
  • last time i checked haggis was a stomack not an animal.
  • the haggis shop had no real products just drawn up ones
  • the haggis facts are made up and false

molossia.org

  • It should be .gov seeing its a government site
  • There located in western nevada and have a prisident
  • There address in fake
  • There navy boats are from the 1800

2. from the sites address i would expect to find infomation on martin luther king

My first inpressions were what a insult to martin luther king with little statements on what he said at the hotel and that he had rap lyrics.

After going through some of the articles i found that i was right in the first place. Its a very raciest site with insults to Mr king. Its making the asssumption of that because Mr King was an African American that he was a RnB artist.

readings:

) This reading is on the origin of the internet. The first recorded description of the social interactions that could be enabled through networking was a series of memos written by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in August 1962. There were 4 ground rules for this to work a couple of them were; Communications would be on a best effort basis. If a packet didn't make it to the final destination, it would shortly be retransmitted from the source and
There would be no global control at the operations level.

2) This reading was also on the history of the internet. The sites home page contained a picture of a satellite showing all the signals that are being sent. The page also had 5 chapters:
· The development of computers till 1960’s
· From Arpanet to world wide web
· History of electronic mail(email)
· Search engines
· Basic net data.

Week 3 Online Libraries

ONLINE LIBRARIES

Well today in our third week lecture we learnt about online libraries and data bases.
We were asked to answer 3 questions on the libraries.
The first question was could we name some online libraries, such as catalogues.
The next one was why would we use these data bases, for studying and research and the final question was the advantages and disadvantages of the online libraries, some advantages are that its 24/7 so you can go on at any time and all the information are current. The disadvantages are the sites are subscription only and u need a pass word.
We also learnt what types of online libraries there are:
  • online text reposition
  • online journals
  • electronic books
  • musical
  • artworks

We were shown by Helen how to find full text info for assignments by using specific sites such as emerald, pro crest and sage.

Workshop 3

When using the online library to find an article on global warming on business i found there are heaps of ways to find info on it:

  1. when using the page you can choose different faculty's to make your search easier.
  2. on one of the pages they were in categories on Australian, International and they had dictionary and encyclopedia links.
  3. Instead of writing a general word in the search engine go to advanced search and select the categories that suit your topic to get a more refined search.
  4. The ecu library has these useful tip sheets that can help you through alot of topics.
  5. The home page has a link to audio and podcast if you learn better that way.
  6. You can go to other university libraries to find other info.
  7. You can find journal titles.
  8. You can find referencing guides.
  9. There are online library workshop and tours.
  10. And there's also reverse readings.

when visiting the medline plus web page i found it had the list of Diseases and Conditions, Tests and Diagnostic Procedures and Surgery and Treatment Procedures. Any one visiting this site would be able to find everything they were after, whether it was cancer medication or surgery.

I was keen to learn more about anabolic steroids so i searched for it in the page and came up with some new info on it. The proper name is Anabolic-androgenic steroids which are man made and boost your testosterone level. These drugs come with a danger sign flashing above them because steroids can cause permentate damage to your heart and liver.

The type of people visiting this web site would be people involved in the medicine world like doctors, med students doing research on a type of drug. also people that have cancer or know some one that has cancer or are having surgery, this site would provide information on drugs they will be using and the rehab they will go through.

readings:

1) This reading is on finding what you want on the web, displayed on the BBC website. This article written by Bill Thompson is on how to search the internet without going straight to Google. He talks about how searching blogs can give you information not on a web site. He then goes onto say that we will never search properly until we move away from the dumb web we have today towards something like the semantic web.
2) This reading from the USC Beaufort library is on basic search tips. It has quick tips that will work on most search engines. Use (+) and (-) signs to include and exclude words. Put your most important keywords first in the string. Some of the tips they had for a Boolean search are; always use caps when typing Boolean operations in your search statements.

Week 2

LECTURE:

Well today in the lecture we were told to get into groups and come up with answers to some questions.

The questions were on windows applications, internet browsers and resent internet pages we had visted in the past couple of days. most of the answers to the applications i knew because i have windows vista at home and have used most of the windows application, but there were a few i hadn't heard of before like windows access, publisher and front page.

We then learnt about the difference between windows vista 07 and windows xp 03 and the pros and cons on both, like in vista word you have to customize your toolbars unlike in xp it has all the tools you need at the top of the page.

We also learnt how to find programs on windows vista by just simply goin to the search bar on the bottom left corner on the desk top.

TUTURIAL:

Today in the tut we edited this word exercise so that we got a understaing on how to edit our work so that when we hand it in it is presented 100 times better than it would look with out the skills i learnt in this class. I have posted the document onto my blog and it there for veiwing.

Then using excel we create graphs using our weekly acvtivity hours for the data. My results have been posted for veiwing.

1) This reading is on how to use Microsoft word for APA tasks. The tips they show are very basic, for e.g. How to use to backspace and delete key and how to highlight text. It then moves onto typeface fonts and margin alignment and has diagrams on how to do it.
It carries onto how to alphabetize reference lists, indents, page headers, customize auto-formatting for list, how to turn of hypertext, and dot leaders for table of content.

2) This reading was on graphic formats using adobe Photoshop. The first tip was on bitmap. This is used when dealing with pictures/graphics and when you save them your pictures save them to bitmap. Compu serve is a compressed format that is designed to minimize file transfer time over phone lines.
